Jon Deuser President & CEO
Jon Deuser joined The Smith-Free Group in May, 2005. A 15-year veteran of Congress, Deuser originally came to Washington in 1987 to join the staff of his hometown mentor, U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell. He worked as a Personal Assistant and Legislative Aide on the McConnell staff before matriculating to the University of Virginia School of Law.
After graduating and passing the Bar, Deuser returned to Capitol Hill as a Legislative Assistant for then-Congressman Jim Bunning, spending the next 12 years working for Bunning and rising to serve as Chief of Staff. During that time, he was intimately involved in policy development, focusing on financial services, health care and tax, as well as leading the 2004 re-election campaign.
In 2020, Jon took the helm of Smith-Free as President and CEO, partnering with Bob Hickmott to take ownership of the company in early 2021.
Jon Deuser graduated cum laude with a B.A. in English and History from Indiana University in 1987, and holds his J.D. from University of Virginia Law School where he worked as Notes Editor for the Journal of Law and Politics. He currently lives in Alexandria, Virginia with his wife Mary Jane and has three grown children - Kelly, Caterina and Jack.
